Choose Wisely in the Scorpion Swamp!

The newest adventure available from Tin Man Games, as part of the Fighting Fantasy Classics library, is... Scorpion Swamp!

Sharpen your swords, steady your nerve, and maybe pack a spare pair of socks, because Scorpion Swamp has officially arrived as the latest DLC gamebook for Fighting Fantasy Classics!

A new edition of Scorpion Swamp - featuring brand new artwork by Tazio Bettin - is also on the horizon. It is coming as part of the second tranche of FF titles going from Steve Jackson Games in the States. You can back the Kickstarter here.

Scorpion Swamp Revisited

Currently funding on Kickstarter is Fighting Fantasy - Solo Adventure Gamebooks - Set 2 from Steve Jackson Games.

The classic adventures that will be published through this Kickstarter are Creature of Havoc, House of Hell, Caverns of the Snow Witch, Scorpion Swamp, and Island of the Lizard King.

All of these adventures will feature the original cover art and internal illustrations, apart from Scorpion Swamp.

It is not always possible to acquire the rights to reuse the original art from a gamebook, and this proved to be the case with Scorpion Swamp. As a result, another artist has been commissioned to produce all-new artwork for the book, and that artist is Tazio Bettin.

Fans of Fighting Fantasy will already know that Tazio illustrated Steve Jackson's 40th anniversary FF adventure, Secrets of Salamonis, and he has now brought his clean line and deeply shadowed realistic style of a veritable classic of the series.

Giant.

Master of Wolves.

Swamp Orcs.

As well as the internal illustrations, Tazio has also reimagined the Pool Beast for the gamebook's cover.

There is still plenty of time to jump on board and join the Kickstarter and secure yourself a copy of the new edition of Scorpion Swamp, featuring Tazio Bettin's incredible artwork.

Special Guests Steve Jackson (US) and Sir Ian Livingstone attending the UK Games Expo 2025

The American-born game designer, and some time Fighting Fantasy gamebook author, Steve Jackson is one of the Special Guests attending the UK Games Expo, as is Sir Ian Livingstone.

During the weekend, Steve will be meeting with Sir Ian at the Fighting Fantasy stand (Stand 2-359) to discuss the release of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks by Steve Jackson Games in the US.

Fighting Fantasy at the UK Games Expo 2025

Fighting Fantasy will have a significant presence at the UK Games Expo this year. The event is on from Friday 30th May - Sunday 1st June 2025 at the NEC, just outside Birmingham, and you will find the Fighting Fantasy crew at Stand 2-359 in Hall 2.

Fighting Fantasy - Stand 2-359

As you can see from the plan of Hall 2, Sir Ian Livingstone will be in attendance, as will FF author and historian Jonathan Green, who collaborated on Magic Realms: The Art of Fighting Fantasy. However, please note that Sir Ian will only be attending on the Saturday and the Sunday, while Jonathan will be there for all three days.

In other exciting news, another of the Special Guests attending the event is the American-born games designer Steve Jackson - author of Scorpion Swamp, Demons of the Deep and Robot Commando, and the man who will be bringing Fighting Fantasy back to the US later this year. Talking of which, the first five books are now available to pre-order from Steve Jackson Games.

Others in attendance at the UK Games Expo include representatives of Martin Wallace Games, who are currently putting the finishing touches to Fighting Fantasy Adventures, All Rolled Up, who are going to be selling the first in an extended range of FF-themed products, Dan Jack of Blue Giant Studios, who produce the official Fighting Fantasy Legends miniatures range, and Oscar Carlquist of Sound Realms, publishers of the updated Steve Jackson's F.I.S.T. audio adventure.

Joining Sir Ian and Jonathan on the Fighting Fantasy stand will be Paul Toderas from Germany games company Ulisses Spiele. He will be demoing the company's new Fighting Fantasy Quest - The Warlock of Firetop Mountain board game, so why not stop by Stand 2-359 and try it out yourself?

Lastly, Sir Ian will be giving a talk about his 50 Years in Games, on Saturday 31st May, from 3:00-4:00pm, on Stage B in Hall 4.

If you are going to the UK Games Expo this year, may your STAMINA never fail!

Fighting Fantasy - Solo Adventure Gamebooks - Back in the US!

The Steve Jackson Games' Kickstarter for the new US editions of the Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks is now live!

In 1982, Games Workshop co-founders Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson co-created Fighting Fantasy, a series of solo adventure books that would revolutionize the genre.

Combining gripping narratives with dice rolls and other tabletop RPG mechanics, Fighting Fantasy captivated readers, becoming a worldwide hit. Now this multi-million-selling book series returns to print in the United States for the first time in over two decades.

Steve Jackson Games – helmed by the American game designer Steve Jackson (no relation) – is working closely with Sir Ian Livingstone to deliver an amazing Fighting Fantasy experience to the United States.

Sir Ian’s thoughts on this collaborative effort show the enthusiasm both sides of the pond have for this project:

The Fighting Fantasy books have delighted fans for decades. What makes these versions special?
  • The original art! When possible, SJ Games are using the original black-and-white artwork for the interiors – most of which hasn’t been available in over a decade!
  • Designed for readability! The original Fighting Fantasy books were smaller mass-market paperbacks. They were perfect to sneak into your lunch bag at school, but these new versions are designed to make leaping into a hero’s life easier than ever, with larger print and enhanced formatting that makes reading a joy.
  • Available in the States! No longer do you need to order overseas or via online auction sites.
  • Designed as a set! These editions will look great on your shelf, with a unified design, numbered spines, and evocative art. If you’re a longtime fan, these are the versions you wish you had when you were younger! And if you’re new to Fighting Fantasy excitement, these books will be a gateway to worlds beyond imagination.
Rewards include the five-book set (cheaper than the books will cost when they come to retail), and a special retailer pledge.

40 years of Scorpion Swamp

Scorpion Swamp will see print again next year, as part of Steve Jackson Games' publication of the Fighting Fantasy series in the US, so today we look back on the history of the first non-Jackson and Livingstone FF gamebook, 40 years after it was first published.

In March 1983, TheWarlock of Firetop Mountain, The Citadel of Chaos and The Forest of Doom topped The Sunday Times bestseller charts. Two more titles, Starship Traveller and City of Thieves, appeared later that same year. Having seen how successful the series was, other publishers began jumping on the bandwagon, rushing out competing gamebook series of their own. But Puffin Books were keen to maintain their position at the head of the game.

“Puffin decided our best battle strategy would be to publish a new FF book every month,” says Jackson. “There was no way Ian and I could write a book a month, so we decided to commission other authors… and called it the ‘Jackson & Livingstone Present’ series.

“As it happens, our first ‘Presents’ series author was Steve Jackson – the American one, designer of GURPS – who had come over to the UK to talk business with Games Workshop. So the book was: Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone Present: Scorpion Swamp… by Steve Jackson. Very confusing!”

“I was visiting London,” explains US Steve, who was already known to the UK Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone since Games Workshop was distributing his games on this side of the Pond. “They described their travails in creating FF books, and the difficulty of flow-charting. I sat down and wrote the first third of Scorpion Swamp, and they liked it.”

There are still people to this day who do not realise that the Steve Jackson who wrote Scorpion Swamp, Demons of the Deep and Robot Commando, and the Steve Jackson who wrote such classics as The Citadel of Chaos, House of Hell and Creature of Havoc are two completely different people.

“Occasionally I am presented with a copy of one of UK Steve’s books to sign,” says US Steve. “I always explain, and if they really want me to, I will sign it ‘The wrong Steve Jackson’.”

Published in 1984, with cover and internal art by Duncan Smith, Scorpion Swamp (FF8) sent the hero into the foetid fens of the title with nothing but his sword to defend himself, and a magic Brass Ring that detected evil as well as letting the hero know which way was north.

Unlike other Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, Scorpion Swamp allowed the player to choose one of three quests, from a selection of patrons who were Good, Evil and Neutral. The gameplay was non-linear in design, enabling the hero to revisit locations and explore the swamp as he so desired, and a direct consequence of US Steve’s background in RPGs.

Did you know...?

When the US Steve Jackson visited Games Workshop, the plan was that UK Steve and Ian Livingstone would show him the sights of London. However, having been persuaded to write a Fighting Fantasy book for them that was what he did – right then and there in their office! The planned tour of London never happened, but ever since many thousands of readers have enjoyed exploring Scorpion Swamp instead.

Scorpion Swamp is one of the FF adventures that have been mapped by Qatlas, and you can purchase a copy for your gaming room, or to aid you with completing thne gamebook, here.

Steve Jackson and Sir Ian Livingstone at the UK Games Expo

Sir Ian Livingstone met Steve Jackson at the UK Games Expo this year.

No, not the co-creator of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, but someone who has contributed to the series nonetheless.

Steve Jackson (of Steve Jackson Games) was over from the US promoting his company's many games but made time to catch up with Sir Ian.

Steve contributed three titles to the Fighting Fantasy series, when they were published by Puffin Books - Scorpion Swamp, Demons of the Deep, and Robot Commando.
