And the winner of the FF World Cup is...

City of Thieves!

Recently, FF fan Rob Hatton has been running a series of polls to determine which Fighting Fantasy gamebook people think is the best. After a number of rounds, 60+ solo adventures were whittled down to just two - Ian Livingstone's City of Thieves, and Ian Livingstone's Deathtrap Dungeon.

Both books were originally illustrated by Iain McCaig, and after a titanic struggle, which looked to go either way for much of the match, City of Thieves ended up taking a small lead over Deathtrap Dungeon, and managed to hold its rival at bay long enough to take the top spot. The final score was 193 votes to 180.

You can find out more by visiting the Fighting Fantasy (and other gamebooks) Facebook group.

Fighting Fantasy Legends - 48 hours in!

It's hard to believe that the Fighting Fantasy Legends Kickstarter by Atlantis Miniatures has only been live for 48 hours, and yet in that time it has raised almost £30,000, having achieved 243% of its original funding goal!

This means that a host of new miniatures have been unlocked, including a pair of Skeleton Warriors, Klash the Chaos Warrior (from The Port of Peril), and new sculpt of the Quag-Shugguth (from the same book), Baron Sukumvit, Lord Carnuss and Lord Azzur, and two of the assassins from Assassins of Allanisa.

Don't forget, on Sunday 20th October at 2:00pm BST, GeekGirlBookWorm will be hosting a paint-a-long of the new Lord Azzur miniature on Twitch. Not only will she be giving the miniature away, once it's painted, but she will also be giving away a signed copy of Ian Livingstone's newest Fighting Fantasy gamebook, Assassins of Allansia!

The Fighting Fantasy Legends Kickstarter campaign still has the best part of three weeks left to run, but don't delay - pledge today*!

Trial of Champions Competition Winners!

You may remember that at the end of the summer we ran a competition for budding dungeon designers to concoct a trap for that most notorious of underground labyrinths, Deathtrap Dungeon! Well today we are pleased to announce the winners, who each receive a pair of complimentary Steam keys courtesy of Tin Man Games.

So, in no particular order...

DEVIOUS TRAP by Pat O'Neill

Simple trap design for tunnel or corridor of any decent length: halfway along, a fireball shoots out of the wall behind the hapless victim, and continues along the tunnel, making the victim either try to run to the end and avoid it, or brace for impact.

As it turns out, the fireball is an illusion, and does no harm. The hidden spiked pitfall trap a couple of feet further down the tunnel, however, is quite real.

TRIAL BY LEGO by Lawrence Bowyer

THE HUMAN WALL by Paul S

The idea of the wall demands the hero collect the diamond/gem located at the centre which is an item necessary to obtain the true ending.

The nature of the trap is to suck the hero onto the wall which keeps one frozen in time once attached. The wall itself has previous adventurers on it already doomed to spend their eternity stuck. My drawing includes 14 but it can be an infinite number. The hero cannot collect the diamond/gem without allowing him or herself to get sucked onto the wall.

My plan for the hero being allowed to escape the human wall involves memorising a word of release from a tome found earlier in the adventure which of course would have to be classically decoded via turning letters to numbers and adding them and turning to the new paragraph. Of course if the paragraph makes no sense it is incorrect.

The human wall floats inside a dungeon and only appears to the hero once they arrive at the location which triggers it to appear. It looks like a membrane wall red in colour with pulsating veins throughout of a blue, pink and violet colours. Due to the multiple races that the hero can be in a Fighting Fantasy adventure, the human wall will appear to the hero as the race that they are. For example dwarf wall, elf wall, etc.

DEATHTRAP TRAP by Leigh Cooper

It’s simple really, you show the player the entire trap complete with:

Crushing spike wall
Spinning circular saw blade wall
Barrels of highly explosive black powder
A vat of dragon breath fire that melts even the hardest metal and stone
A vat of plague acid that corrupts/melts even the most valiant of heart
And above all this? A trapdoor (of course) holding back 1000s of gallons of toxic bilge water (a la Creature of Havoc) housing a giant lamprey beast of doom.

It’s really simple, there is a plain button in the centre of the room, they have the choice to push it or not and here’s the non-twist, if they push it? They obviously die horribly... but I bet players push it, I know I would. If they don’t? The go on their merry way... but have they missed something?

As a huge fan of Creature of Havoc I would possibly put in a secret ‘favourable’ end to the room but have it hinge of finding an item or code (like when you use the ‘add 50 to the page number’ mechanic if you have this item).

THE TREASURE ROOM by Matthew Ward

You arrive at a bit where there is a long tunnel leading down to a room, the tunnel has spiked hurdles high and low you have to jump/duck under, as you start forward a massive vat of boiling water/acid above you tips forward and you have to run for it. Throw a dice for each of the obstacles (6 - 10 in total, it's up to you), you jump the first one, duck the next, jump, duck, jump, duck etc, on the jumping ones a 2-6 means you jump it, a 1 means you hit it and stumble, on the ducking ones a 1-5 means you duck it, a 6 means you hit it, when you hit the obstacle you lose 1 or 2 stamina, if you hit three hurdles the water/acid catches you and you die.

When you make it down to the bottom there is a pit to jump, test your luck to make the jump across, if you fail you fall in the pit with the water/acid falling on top of you and a painful death, if you do make it the water / acid falls down the pit and you are safe, for now! When you walk forward you trigger a trip wire and hear a noise, roll a dice as a poisoned dart has been fired out the wall (or an axe swings down from the roof, i like either), a 1 means you move out the way just in time, a 2 or 3 means it snicks you causing 2 stamina loss, a 4-5 means it hit you hard losing 4 stamina, a 6 is a direct hit to the head and you die.

Past this there is a big room with a handle on the wall, there is a treasure chest on the far side guarded  by a constantly changing ball of energy, a voice says "You are welcome to the contents of the chest if you can defeat me, pull the handle to reveal my true form" Roll a die:
1 - Snake, stamina 2
2 - Orc, stamina 6
3 - Ogre, stamina 10
4 - Dragon, stamina 16
5 - A reflection of yourself (with the same stats)
6 - Some kind character who wants to help you, restores your stats to initial value and gives you some special equipment

When you win you find something useful in the chest to help later on, some provisions, or maybe some gold.

Congratulations to all the winners, and if you're tempted to take on the terrors of Deathtrap Dungeon for yourself, you might want to take a look at Sentient Play's forthcoming The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon.

Baron Sukumvit is looking for a new dungeon designer, and that person could be YOU!

To be in with a chance of winning one of ten Steam keys for Tin Man Games' Fighting Fantasy adaptations, all you have to do is design a frighteningly fiendish trap for Deathtrap Dungeon. The closing date for the competition is Sunday 30th September 2018*, and any entries submitted after that date will not be considered. The winners will be announced as soon as they have been chosen.

So don't delay - start designing today! And may your STAMINA never fail!

The Gates of Death competition winners

Just over a month ago, we launched a competition to win a signed copy of Charlie Higson's The Gates of Death. Entrants had to draw what they thought Ulrakaah, the Big Bad of the book, looked like.

Before we reveal who's won, here's how illustrator Vlado Krizan imagined the Queen of Darkness...

And here's how cover artist Robert Ball envisaged the Mother of Demons...

Fans old and new alike entered the competition, and so, rather fittingly, we have actually ended up with two winners - one child and one adult. And they are...

Ollie Troman, aged 8

Chris Gill

Both Ollie and Chris will each be receiving a copy of The Gates of Death, courtesy of Scholastic Books, signed and personalised by Charlie Higson himself, as well as a Steam key for Tin Man Games' The Warlock of Firetop Mountain.

Four runners up will also receive codes for The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, and they are Camden Travis, Tenisha Raymond, Simon Walpole and Kalman Mikorka.

Camden Travis, aged 6

Tenisha Raymond, aged 13

Simon Walpole

Kalman Mikorka

Congratulations to both the winners and the runners-up, and thank you to everyone who entered.

May your STAMINA never fail!

The Femme Fatales of Fighting Fantasy

Today, on fightingfantasy.com, we're celebrating International Women's Day by taking a look back at the heroines and villainesses of the Fighting Fantasy books.

Although primarily aimed at boys, only very rarely did a Fighting Fantasy adventure ever specify that the hero was male. As a result, large numbers of girls also ended up reading and enjoying the books.

“The first Fighting Fantasy gamebook I ever read was The Warlock of Firetop Mountain,” says author, and feminist, Magda Knight. “I was there at the start and consider it a crowning achievement in my life.”

“I encountered Fighting Fantasy gamebooks not too long after they first appeared,” says fantasy author Juliet E McKenna. “I’d gone up to university in 1983 and that’s where I discovered Dungeons & Dragons, Traveller, Aftermath, Toon, Heroes, Car Wars and other tabletop role-playing games which instantly appealed to my lifelong love of fantasy and science-fiction... Then someone lent me a copy of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain… Solo gaming within a system that played fair, in the sense of punishing stupidity as well as rewarding intelligent thinking, and still with the added edge of unpredictable dice rolls landing you in no-win situations... The endless variations and possibilities meant you could play the book time and again. Even once you’d won, you could go back and see where the roads not taken might have led.”

Some of Fighting Fantasy's most memorable villains have, in fact, been villainesses, including Shareella the Snow Witch, the fell sorceress Morgana from Masks of Mayhem, and the vampish Katarina Heydrich from Vault of the Vampire. And their number is soon to be joined by Ulrakaah, Queen of Darkness and Mother of Demons, in Charlie Higson's soon-to-be-released The Gates of Death. Have you entered the competition to win a signed copy of this brand-new Fighting Fantasy gamebook yet?

As well as proving that the female of the is often more deadly than the male, Fighting Fantasy gamebooks have also featured their fair share of heroines and allies, such as Fenestra the Black Elf sorceress from The Seven Serpents, the third book in Steve Jackson's Sorcery! quartet*, Katya of the Crimson Cloak from Howl of the Werewolf, and Hakasan Za, the ninja tracker from Ian Livingstone's The Port of Peril. And then there's Vale Moonwing, the heroine of the Fighting Fantasy Audio Dramas. Have you backed their Kickstarter yet?

So who's your favourite Fighting Fantasy femme fatale? Why not let you know in the comments below?

* The first book in the Sorcery! series, The Shamutanti Hills, is being republished by Scholastic Books very soon.
