The Dungeon on Blood Island

Fighting Fantasy fans, rejoice! Sir Ian Livingstone is writing a brand new Fighting Fantasy gamebook to mark the 40th anniversary of the publication of Deathtrap Dungeon.

Deathtrap Dungeon was the No.1 bestselling children’s book in the UK in 1984, and the 8th bestselling book overall in the UK, even including adult titles.

The Dungeon on Blood Island is a long-awaited sequel.

Jealous of the fame and fortune that Baron Sukumvit’s Deathtrap Dungeon had brought him, his brother Lord Carnuss and an army of slaves spend five years building the ultimate dungeon on Blood Island. Offering a prize of the Golden Orb of Fang, he challenges all-comers to risk their lives to find this priceless treasure and escape with it alive. Filled with deadly creatures, lethal traps, fierce competitors, and danger lurking at every turn, are YOU brave enough to enter The Dungeon on Blood Island?

The cover for The Dungeon on Blood Island will feature an original painting by Iain McCaig who painted the original Deathtrap Dungeon cover. It will also feature internal illustrations by Hungarian artist KrisztiĆ”n Balla and a new map of Allansia by Leo Hartas.

Sir Ian said, “40 years is a very long time to wait for a sequel, but I hope fans of Deathtrap Dungeon both old and new will enjoy my new Fighting Fantasy gamebook The Dungeon on Blood Island. I have tried my best to lure readers to their doom with every choice they make! May their STAMINA never fail!”

Blast from the Past! Dead of Night

Today being the eve of All Hallows' Eve, it seemed like an appropriate time to revisit this chilling classic of yesteryear - Dead of Night!

First published on 2 November 1989, Dead of Night (copyright Jim Bambra and Stephen Hand) took as its setting the kingdom of Gallantaria. the adventure taking place after the events related in The Tasks of Tantalon. It helped complete the integration of the Old World into the wider Fighting Fantasy milieu, being the first solo gamebook to be set there since The Crown of Kings concluded Steve Jackson's Sorcery! series back in 1985.

Working together – rather like Jackson and Livingstone had in the beginning – Bambra tackled the task with his standard approach to writing fantasy scenarios, whereas Hand was keen to push the limits of what was possible in a gamebook. Hand was also hugely inspired by pulp horror, such as the kind produced by Hammer studios in the 1960s and ‘70s.

They agreed that their version of the Old World would be a grimly realistic place, a slice of a horrific medieval world in which politics would play its part too (as can be seen more clearly in Hand’s later, solo titles).

In Dead of Night, the hero is a Demon-Stalker, who has dedicated his life to waging war against the creatures of Chaos. Having thwarted the evil schemes of the Demon Prince Myurr on more than one occasion, the hero’s nemesis exacts his revenge, striking directly against the Demon-Stalker’s family. On top of that, Myurr’s powers are growing and he will soon be able to transport his demonic hordes to the Earthly Plane. The Demon Lord must be stopped!

"On that first book, what happened was that Jim and I plotted all the scenes and characters together," Stephen Hand explained in an interview with AdvancedFightingFantasy.com. "Then we divided the different scenes between us, so I would write one area, and he would write another. When we finished, we actually swapped documents and edited each other's work. This may sound strange, but it worked and lead to a fairly even book written by two very different writers."

In addition to the regular attributes of SKILL, STAMINA and LUCK, Dead of Night features an EVIL score, which start starts at zero. Throughout the adventure, the player may encounter people or creatures, or do things that will increase this score. As a result the player is asked to Test Your Evil at certain points in a manner similar to Testing Your Luck.

The player also has a choice of three "Talents" for their Demon-Stalker, which include Banish Undead, Dark Veil, Heal, Holy Circle, Meditation, Sense Demon, and Speak Demon.

The gamebook was illustrated by Martin McKenna, with a cover by Terry Oakes.

The Abomination, by Martin McKenna.

Dead of Night remains both the first and last time that Bambra contributed an adventure to the FF series, but what a memorable entry it was! Hand, on the other hand, would go on to contribute two more Gallantaria-set adventures before quitting the series - the equally impressive Legend of the Shadow Warriors and Moonrunner.

Blast from the Past! Crypt of the Sorcerer

Originally pitched as Crypt of the Necromancer - until someone at Puffin decided that you couldn’t have the word ‘Necromancer’ in the title of a book aimed at children - Ian Livingstone’s tenth Fighting Fantasy adventure (published in 1987) saw the return of some familiar FF faces and places, whilst also introducing readers to a whole new region of Allansia and some new allies in the hero’s quest to defeat Razaak, the undead sorcerer of the title.

So in Crypt of the Sorcerer we have a return to Darkwood Forest and an appearance by the Wizard Yaztromo (both originally from The Forest of Doom) whilst the hero is transported aboard a hot air balloon to not only the Moonstone Hills but also the baking Plain of Bronze. The adventure is incredibly hard, but full of wonderfully evocative encounters, backed up by the talented fossil-reconstructor John Sibbick’s captivating artwork.

“I found it quite easy to create a style for the interior drawings – more than I expected really," says Sibbick, "although it could be pretty relentless churning out the drawings – and I had no time for any ‘rough’ sketches. Now and again I look at the originals and am amazed at the work and detail involved.”

Demonspawn, by John Sibbick.

“My favourite artist is John Sibbick,” says FF enthusiast Thomas Nielsen. “I think his illustrations hit a nice balance between being realistic, stylised and dirty, and he knows how to make a monstrous creature really monstrous.”

The adventure had a second alternative working title, The Howling Tunnels, which is the place you have to visit to find the fabled Gargantis horn.

Gargantis, by John Sibbick.

Crypt of the Sorcerer was the third FF adventure to feature an original Les Edwards cover, showing the deformed Razaak preparing to cast a spell upon the hero. The painting now resides within Ian Livingstone's personal collection of Fighting Fantasy art.

When the gamebook was reissued by Wizard Books in 2002, Les Edwards produced a new composition for the cover.

As well as being the first gamebook to feature internal black and white art by John Sibbick, Crypt of the Sorcerer is also notable for being the first book to feature a colour map by Leo Hartas, centred upon the Moonstone Hills of central Allansia.

Crypt of the Sorcerer remains one of the hardest Fighting Fantasy adventures to complete, but maybe it's time it was released again to challenge a new generation of brave adventurers.

Fighting Fantasy at UK Games Expo 2017

This weekend, Ian Livingstone was one of the guests attending the UK Games Expo, where Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, and the softback edition of YOU ARE THE HERO - A History of Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks, went down a storm with fans - and not only because Ian was signing them for people.

Ian also gave a talk about his life in games, from the founding of Games Workshop in 1975, through to co-creating Fighting Fantasy with Steve Jackson in 1982, and ultimately bringing Lara Croft to both the small and big screen.

Those fans who attended his talk were treated to a sneak peek of the new FF covers for Scholastic UK's relaunch of the series, and a brand new map of Allansia painted by Leo Hartas.

But have no fear, you will soon be able to see the covers for yourself on www.FightingFantasy.com, including the art for Ian Livingstone's first new gamebook in five years, The Port of Peril.

You can see more photos here.
